Halfling Abilities

  • Halflings have a high level of magic resistance; they add four levels when rolling saving throws.
  • Halflings have deadly accuracy with slings and receive a +4 to hit when using slings.
  • In addition to any bonus languages due to intelligence, halflings speak Common and their respective Alignment tongue. [1]
  • When actively searching, halflings locate secret doors/passages on a 1-2 (on a d6 roll).
  • Halflings can identify noises and detect other sounds on a 1-2 (on a d6 roll).

Additional Note: Although not mentioned in the three LBBs, I do account for the small size and outdoorsy nature of halflings in my games, especially with regard to hiding in outdoor settings with brush or wood cover. This has precedent in the earlier Chainmail rules which note that halfling/hobbits “become invisible” in brush or woods.

Limitations/Disadvantages

  • Halflings can only be fighters. [2]
  • Halflings may not progress beyond 4th level as a fighter (i.e., a Hero).
  • Halflings can only force open doors on a 1 (on a d6 roll).
