Ylfe (singular, ælf ) are mysterious and dangerous Otherworld beings thought to be capable of bringing about illness. There are also folk that connect ylfe with divination. Although many consider ylfe threatening because of their power, others argue that ylfe are not always hostile to the world of men and women. Thus, many common folk seek their protection and blessings through various propitiatory rites intended to secure their favor. This view is believed to be connected with the practice of bestowing an ælf-name on a child.*
Wise and cunning folk teach that ylfe are all male-gendered and possess an otherworldly effeminate beauty. There are many stories (some humorous, some horrifying) about men mistaking an ælf for a beautiful woman due both to the ælf’s beauty and dress. The ylfe are also thought to be connected with the ese in a mysterious way that is not completely understood, but some say they are emissaries of the ese responsible for ensuring the ongoing vitality of society.
Most believe that ylfe are responsible for people experiencing sharp bodily pains or diseased, watery eyes, and it is common practice to call upon the healing skills of cunning folk or the charms of a galdor to drive away the menacing ælf.
