A werwulf is a human believed to be capable of becoming a wolf. Some folk believe that a person can become a wolf by making a pact with Woden and donning a wolfskin. This view is particularly prevalent among warriors. Others believe that werwulfas are cursed individuals doomed to become wolfs at a certain phase of the moon. Many folk believe that the werwulf is particularly dangerous because of its ability to remain undetected amid good people while secretly devouring children and livestock. There are many stories about people being driven into the wild after suspected of being a werwulf. Attitudes toward wolves remain ambiguous since such beasts are often respected and admired while also being feared and reviled as opportunistic killers.
