Most people view land wights as protective land-spirits connected with specific sites or landscapes. They are said to seek vengeance against any who trespass in their domains without the appropriate propitiatory rites. These chthonic beings take on a wide variety of shapes and forms, some hideous in nature; however, wights are not believed to be inherently hostile toward people. They simply are intolerant of trespass, transgression, and any perceived slights. It is not uncommon to find simple shrines where offerings can be made to a local wight.
