Scuccan are evil spirits or demons that mothers whisper tales about to scare misbehaving children. Almost nothing is known about these creatures. Many say they bring about uncontrollable fear. Some claim that they can take the shape of demonic or ghostly canines. Others say that scuccan are headless corpse-dogs wandering deserted paths, and their gaping neck wound sucks victims into the depths of the Underworld. Whatever the truth of the matter is, most folk agree that seeing or hearing a scucca is said to be an omen of death.
