Seaxwulf is a loyal thegn of Cynebald, a lord among the Hastingas who rules from the emerging port settlement of Hastingacæster located on the southern coast. In the late spring of 535, Seaxwulf was summoned by Cynebald and awarded both a wife and land. He was married to Æthelflæd prior to taking responsibility for the awarded land.

Seaxwulf’s gifted land comprised twenty hides north of Sedlescumb, and he was promised any additional land that he could carve from the great forest of Andredes Weald. To assist him in the establishing the community, he was also granted two dozen Welsh slaves. Two boatloads of ceorl families that had just arrived from the continent desiring land and a better future also accompanied him and Æthelflæd.

Seaxwulf is known to be a loyal thegn and veteran of battle. At times, however, he has been viewed as unpredictable, even unexpectedly mean. He has a shaved head with a top knot, and while most consider him handsome, his skin has begun to develop strange patchy growths that have become a topic of rumor and gossip.
